A horrifying incident has shaken the community of Epworth, leaving a man traumatized and his wife in need of medical attention after she was brutally raped by a stranger.

The incident occurred on a dusty road near Stopover Shopping Centre, highlighting the growing concern over sexual attack against women in Zimbabwe.

The couple, who were returning home from the shopping centre around 10pm, encountered a man who began making false claims that he was walking with the wife. The wife immediately denied knowing the man and became violent, attempting to defend herself.

The husband, desperate to protect his wife, tried to intervene but was met with a chilling threat. The attacker, wielding a knife, warned the husband to leave or face dire consequences. Terrified for his own life, the husband was forced to flee the scene, leaving his wife at the mercy of the attacker.

The attacker, unfazed by the husband’s absence, proceeded to rape the woman twice, without any protection. After the horrific ordeal, the woman was left alone and unable to locate her husband. She sought refuge at a nearby house and later received medical attention at Parirenyatwa Hospital.

Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector Luckmore Chakanza confirmed the case, stating that police are actively investigating the rape.

“Police are investigating a rape case in Epworth. Accused person threatened to stab the complainant and her husband with a knife. The accused person raped the complainant twice without protection. After the rape, the complainant failed to locate her husband and sought refuge at a nearby house. She sought medical attention at Parirenyatwa Hospital for medical examination,” Inspector Chakanza said.

Sadly, some men struggle to cope with the trauma of their wives being raped, leading to a breakdown in their relationship. The emotional and psychological impact of such a horrific event can be devastating, and some men may feel a sense of betrayal or even guilt, leading them to withdraw from their partners. This is a complex issue, and support is crucial for both the victim and the partner in navigating the aftermath of such a traumatic experience.

In South Africa, a particularly disturbing trend has emerged where robbers and rapists target couples, often breaking into their homes and raping both the wife and husband. This horrific act is often motivated by a desire to prevent the couple from divorcing after the incident.

The perpetrators aim to instill fear and control, leaving the victims feeling trapped and powerless. Such acts are a stark reminder of the brutality and depravity that can exist within society, and they underscore the urgent need for stronger measures to protect individuals from these heinous crimes.
