Rondebult resident Kgomotso Zitha thought he’d lost his belongings forever after thugs broke into his home on Monday, 12 August, and made off with his laptop and two TV sets.

But thanks to a little help from a local sangoma, Kgomotso got his stolen goods back in a most unexpected way.

Desperate to recover his belongings, Kgomotso turned to his friend and neighbour, Bhekani Khuzwayo, who recommended sangoma James Chuma.

“He told me about sangoma James Chuma who could help him get his belongings back,” said Bhekani.

Kgomotso visited Chuma the following day, who provided him with muthi (traditional medicine) and instructions.

“He gave me muthi to sprinkle in the yard and the thugs will then bring back my stolen goods. I didn’t believe him but took the muthi and went home where I followed his instructions,” said Kgomotso.

Despite his initial skepticism, Kgomotso was astonished when, on Friday, 16 August, he returned home from a friend’s house and found two men placing his stolen goods near his dining room door.

“I approached them and asked what they’re doing with the goods that looked like mine that were stolen. They confirmed they were the ones who stole my belongings and apologised,” said Kgomotso.

Kgomotso admitted he wanted to confront the thieves physically, but neighbours intervened and urged him to let them go.

“I wanted to beat up the two boys, but neighbours told me I should let them go,” he said.

By the time Daily Sun arrived at Kgomotso’s house, the two boys had already left. However, Kgomotso revealed he had opted to seek help from the sangoma instead of reporting the theft to the police.

“I didn’t go to the cops to report the matter. Instead, I opted to go to the sangoma. All I wanted was to get my goods back and I don’t regret my decision,” he said.

Bhekani, who witnessed the return of the stolen goods, confirmed Kgomotso’s initial disbelief.

“He called me to come and see the boys who had stolen his goods, and he wanted to beat them up. I begged him to let the boys go because they apologised,” he said.

Sangoma Chuma, who played a pivotal role in the recovery of the stolen goods, maintained his role was simply to help Kgomotso get his belongings back.

“I just did my job to ensure he gets his stuff back. He’s among the clients I’ve helped to get their stolen goods back and I’m glad he didn’t beat up the boys,” said Chuma.
