A Gweru man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for a brutal attack on a 26-year-old woman in her farmhouse room near Chinhoyi.

Clemence Karuma, 27, was convicted of rape and robbery by the Chinhoyi Magistrates’ Court after a chilling account of his actions unfolded in court.

The court heard that on the night of the attack, Karuma barged into the woman’s room, wielding a torch and demanding a cigarette lighter. When the victim told him she didn’t have one, Karuma’s demands escalated. He threatened to rape her unless she handed over money.

Terrified, the woman desperately tried to save herself by giving Karuma US$15. However, the callous attacker declared it wasn’t enough to stop him, the court heard.

Armed with an iron bar, Karuma forced the woman to undress and then raped her. Following the attack, police swiftly launched an investigation, leading to Karuma’s arrest.

The National Prosecuting Authority confirmed in a statement that he was convicted and sentenced to 15 years behind bars for his heinous crime.

The sentence, which was handed down by the Chinhoyi Magistrates’ Court, was met with relief by the victim and her family.
