BINDURA: A chilling tale of death and the unknown has gripped the community of Gunyere, under Chief Masembura in Bindura, where a woman is believed to have been eaten alive and her body subsequently devoured by unseen creatures. The incident has left the community in shock and fear, with whispers of witchcraft swirling through the village.
Charity Gunyere (45), a mother of two, passed away last Monday, but her death was not ordinary. Her brother, Vincent Gunyere (46), described the events leading up to her demise as a terrifying ordeal.
“My sister’s ordeal began when she went to collect firewood in the forest behind our home. She was with her two young children and tried to stabilize a bundle of firewood. She failed to do so, fell with the bundle, and was unable to walk, forcing her to crawl home,” he said.
The incident began with a seemingly innocuous accident. Charity, while collecting firewood with her children, tripped and fell, injuring her leg. She was taken to the hospital, treated, and discharged, but her troubles were far from over.
“Charity then started being eaten alive, flesh being devoured from all her limbs, including her cheeks and ears. This continued as she was ill, and we could see the flesh being torn off, leaving teeth marks,” Vincent explained.
The family witnessed the horrifying transformation of Charity’s body, as flesh was seemingly torn away, leaving behind gruesome wounds. The devoured body parts included the toes of her left foot.
“After my sister was discharged from the hospital, she only lived for two days at home before she died on Monday. Her body, which was still in the house, began to be eaten by unseen creatures. It’s clear that these were witches, from the way she was eaten alive and then her body devoured. The wounds didn’t bleed, it was as if they were sucked or chewed,” Vincent said.
The family’s horror didn’t end with Charity’s death. Her body, already bearing the scars of a horrifying ordeal, was further mutilated after her passing.
Vincent recounted, “Before the burial, elders, including grandparents and great-grandparents, examined the body and found it had been bitten, with some fingers reduced to bones, limbs devoid of flesh, and both ears missing. After the elders finished examining the body, a friend who was washing it also noticed the devoured flesh. This friend revealed the story after the burial, and we are now terrified.”
The family, shaken to their core, sought answers to this inexplicable tragedy. “In our family, we grieve as others do. Two months ago, our aunt passed away from illness, and her body was buried properly.
This incident of my sister’s body being eaten is the first. We need help from traditional healers or prophets to understand what happened and whether witches ate my sister alive or if it was just a natural phenomenon,” Vincent said.
They sought guidance from Chief Masembura, who, like them, was baffled by the events. “Chief Masembura was shocked by the incident, saying he had never seen anything like it. As a family, we are waiting to consult with healers because everyone is very scared,” said Vincent.
The family is now seeking answers from traditional healers and prophets, hoping to understand the cause of this inexplicable tragedy. They are haunted by the possibility of witchcraft, and the chilling reality that their beloved Charity may have been a victim of a dark and sinister force.
