Harare: A 25-year-old Harare man, Mr Fungai Dehwa, is seeking US$4 000 in medical bills after being struck by a car at a pedestrian crossing point in July. The accident, which occurred on July 9, 2024, left Mr Dehwa with a broken leg and a hefty medical bill.

The case is currently before the Harare Civil Court, where Mr Dehwa is claiming damages from Mr Kelvin Nyandure, the driver of the vehicle involved in the accident.

Mr Dehwa alleges that Mr Nyandure was speeding and ran him over at a zebra crossing. “He was speeding and ran me over at a zebra crossing,” Mr Dehwa told the court. “He was supposed to pay for my hospital bills, but he only bought bandages and pills that lasted for one week.”

Mr Dehwa further stated that he was advised to have an operation to have a stainless steel plate inserted in his leg.

Mr Nyandure, in his defence, claims that he has already settled the medical bills. “I gave him ZiG14 252 for the operation and US$550 for the medicine,” he said. “I know I was wrong, but this four thousand dollars is too much.”

The presiding magistrate, Ms Meenal Narotam, advised the two parties to try and reach an agreement on a settlement amount and return to court.
