Harare was rocked by another tragic road accident on Thursday, 10 August, as a Toyota Hilux double cab ran over four pedestrians crossing Sam Nujoma Street (previously known as Second Street Extension), claiming two lives and leaving two others injured.
The accident, which occurred at approximately 10:00 am opposite Banc ABC, highlights the growing concern over road safety in the capital city. The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed the incident, stating that the vehicle, carrying three passengers, struck the pedestrians as they attempted to cross the busy thoroughfare.
The impact of the collision was devastating, leaving two victims dead at the scene. The bodies of the deceased were transported to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals for post-mortem examinations, while the two injured pedestrians were also taken to the same hospital for medical treatment.
This latest incident comes just two weeks after a similar tragedy occurred on the Masvingo-Mbalabala Road, where a Nissan NP200 vehicle veered off the road and struck four pedestrians walking along a footpath. Two pedestrians were killed in that accident, while the driver and two other pedestrians sustained injuries.
The ZRP has urged motorists to exercise caution and adhere to traffic regulations to prevent further accidents. They have also called on pedestrians to be vigilant and use designated crossing points whenever possible.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of life in these recent accidents. We urge all road users to be responsible and to prioritize safety on our roads,” said ZRP.
