The Harare-Mutare road, a vital artery connecting the capital to the eastern highlands, has once again become a scene of tragedy, claiming the lives of at least four people in a horrific head-on collision yesterday afternoon.

The accident, which occurred at the 48 km peg, involved a Proton Bakers haulage truck and a Toyota Isis pirate taxi, commonly known as a “mushikashika.”

Eyewitnesses at the scene paint a chilling picture of the events leading up to the crash. The driver of the Toyota Isis, carrying seven passengers, is alleged to have recklessly attempted to overtake in a continuous lane, leading to the devastating collision. The impact of the crash was so severe that four people are feared dead, while the exact number of injured remains unclear.

As news crews arrived at the scene, the cries of the injured could be heard, echoing the pain and desperation of those caught in the aftermath of the tragedy. The cause of the accident is currently under investigation, but reckless driving is suspected, with eyewitnesses placing the blame squarely on the Toyota Isis driver.

This latest incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of road safety and responsible driving practices. The stretch of road between Bromley and Surrey Shopping Centre, where yesterday’s accident occurred, is fast becoming a notorious blackspot.

Just last week, another head-on collision claimed the lives of five family members travelling in a Honda Fit. The family was returning from a graduation ceremony when their vehicle collided with a Ford Ranger.

The frequency of these accidents raises serious concerns about the safety of this stretch of road.

Our hearts go out to the families and loved ones of the victims of yesterday’s accident. This is a time of immense grief and sorrow, and we hope that the community can come together to support those affected by this tragedy. May the souls of the deceased find peace, and may those injured find solace and a speedy recovery.
