A tragic incident unfolded in Masvingo yesterday morning, leaving a member of the Neighbourhood Watch Committee dead after being struck by a police officer’s vehicle. The incident, which occurred at Craft Centre around 6 am, has sparked outrage and raised concerns about the conduct of some law enforcement officers.

According to impeccable sources, the Neighbourhood Watch member was crossing from Rujeko to Chikato Police Station for their weekly drills when he was hit by the vehicle. “Neighbourhood Watch Committee members hold drills every Wednesday, and the man was crossing from Rujeko to Chikato Police Station. A police officer who was driving along the Beitbridge – Masvingo highway, heading into town, ran him over,” revealed the source.

The source further alleged that the police officer was using his vehicle as an illegal taxi to transport Early Childhood Development (ECD) pupils. “Some are alleging that the police officer was using his vehicle as a taxi (mushikashika) to carry Early Childhood Development (ECD) pupils for their school-run,” they said.

The Mirror reached out to National Police Spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi for comment, but he stated that he was not aware of the matter. “I am busy with SADC meeting preparations, and I am not aware of the matter,” he said.
