A 54-year-old man, Gorden Moyo, stands accused of engaging in acts of sodomy with a 16-year-old boy over the course of nearly a year. The people of Tsholotsho, Matabeleland North Province were shocked to hear of such a disturbing case
The unspeakable abuse came to light after the teenage victim confided in his family about the atrocities that had occurred during his frequent visits to Moyo’s home. While there, away from watchful eyes, the boy alleges he suffered unimaginable acts of depravity at the hands of his much older host. If convicted of the crimes, the defendant faces severe punishment under the law for the corrupt actions which have understandably outraged the close-knit community. Justice will now be sought for the young man who endured months of such unthinkable torment.
Moyo’s confession to the police is as chilling as the alleged abuse itself. He claimed that he had never been involved with a woman in his entire life and had only had sex with men. This shocking revelation adds another layer of complexity to the case, raising questions about Moyo’s motivations and the potential for deeper psychological issues.
The abuse, which began sometime in August 2023, involved Moyo taking the boy to his homestead, giving him money, and then sexually abusing him. In exchange for the “unnatural encounters,” Moyo was giving the boy money ranging from 20 rand to 80 rand. The boy, who was clearly being groomed and manipulated, was often lured to Moyo’s homestead with the promise of money, making him vulnerable to the abuse.
The abuse came to light when the boy’s stepmother noticed his frequent visits to Moyo’s homestead and questioned him about his relationship with the older man. The boy, finally feeling safe enough to speak out, disclosed the entire ordeal to his family. This act of courage is a testament to the boy’s strength and resilience in the face of such horrific abuse.
Moyo has since appeared before Tsholotsho resident magistrate, Lesigo Ngwenya, charged with sodomy as defined in Section 73 (3) (c) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act Chapter 9:23. He was not asked to plead and was remanded in custody after appearing at Regional Court B in Bulawayo.
