Beitbridge – A 51-year-old man faces charges of aggravated indecent assault after fondling a school girl’s private parts and allegedly attempting to have sex with her.
The accused, whose identity remains undisclosed pending his court appearance this week, where he will answer to charges of allegedly indecently assaulting a 17-year-old girl he was transporting to school as part of his daily routine.
The incident occurred on Tuesday morning when the accused, a known school-run transporter in Beitbridge, was entrusted with the responsibility of ferrying children to nearby schools. He had already dropped off primary school children by 6:45 am and was left with the 17-year-old girl, destined for a secondary school within the town.
However, instead of taking the girl to her school, the accused allegedly drove past the institution, forcing the girl’s head between her legs. He then stopped at a secluded spot, where he allegedly forcibly fondled her private parts, tearing her blouse in the process as he attempted to rape her.
The young girl, displaying remarkable courage, fought back against her attacker, forcing him to release her. She later confided in her schoolmates and her mother, who promptly reported the incident to the police. The accused was subsequently arrested under case number CR167/07/24.
The accused, who is understood to be a neighbour of the victim, is known for his regular school runs. He had earned the trust of parents in the area, who relied on him to safely transport their children to and from school.
Meanwhile, police are urging parents to be vigilant and to report any suspicious activity to the authorities. They are also working with the community to provide support and counselling to the victim and her family.
The accused is expected to appear in court this week.
