The atmosphere at Jeche Primary School in Sadza, Mashonaland East Province, is sombre after a domestic dispute turned deadly, leaving a teacher dead and his wife facing murder charges.
Douglas Jeche, a respected teacher at the school, was found dead on July 19th, his body bearing the brutal marks of an assault. His wife, Memory Choga, has been arrested and is facing charges of murder.
The police investigation revealed a chilling account of a seemingly ordinary domestic dispute escalating to a fatal confrontation. It is alleged that Jeche had transferred his monthly salary from his bank account to his EcoCash wallet without informing his wife. Choga, unaware of the transaction, was unable to withdraw money from her husband’s account, leading to a heated argument.
“On July 19, 2024, Memory Choga (41) was arrested in connection with a case of murder which occurred at Jeche Primary School, Sadza, in which her husband Douglas Choga (45) died. The suspect indiscriminately assaulted the victim with a log following a misunderstanding after the husband had transferred his monthly salary from his bank account into his EcoCash account. The husband sustained multiple wounds all over the body and he succumbed to the injuries,” confirmed National police spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi.
The incident has sparked widespread concern about the rising number of domestic violence cases in Zimbabwe. The tragedy highlights the need for greater awareness and support for families struggling with conflict and the importance of seeking help from professionals before situations escalate to violence.
“This is a terrible tragedy. We need to break the cycle of violence by providing support and resources to families in need,” Mrs Patience Chimbodza, a social worker said.
The incident has also raised questions about the role of financial pressures in fueling domestic violence. With Zimbabwe facing economic challenges, many families are struggling to make ends meet, leading to increased stress and tension.
“Financial difficulties can put a lot of pressure on relationships. It’s important for couples to communicate openly about their finances and to seek support if they are struggling,” said Mrs. Chimbodza.
