A chilling case of domestic violence has left a trail of sorrow and condemnation in Chivero Village, under Chief Mujinga’s area in Hurungwe as Kasina Kawocha, a 61-year-old man, was sentenced to six years in prison for the culpable homicide of his wife, Spejina.
The sentence, handed down by Chinhoyi High Court judge Justice Philda Muzofa, reflects the gravity of the crime, though the community remains divided on the justice served.
The court heard how on August 30, 2023, a seemingly ordinary day turned tragic for the couple, who had been married for 49 years. A simple misunderstanding, sparked by Kawocha’s query about why Spejina had not bathed his nephew, escalated into a horrifying act of violence.
The courtroom was filled with a palpable tension as the details of the incident unfolded. Kawocha, initially charged with murder, pleaded not guilty, but accepted responsibility for the lesser charge of culpable homicide. The court documents revealed a chilling sequence of events. Kawocha, consumed by anger, grabbed a log from a nearby fire and struck his wife twice on the head, inflicting fatal injuries.
Spejina, gravely wounded, was rushed to Murambi Clinic and later transferred to Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries. The news of her death left behind a trail of grief and disbelief.
The judge, in her sentencing remarks, acknowledged the tragic loss of life and the devastating impact it had on the family and community. She highlighted the gravity of the crime, emphasizing that domestic violence is a serious societal issue that demands swift and decisive action.
