The quiet village of Kwanaka, nestled under the watchful gaze of Chief Mutambara in Chimanimani, has been rocked by a brutal act of violence, leaving a community reeling in shock and disbelief. The incident, which unfolded on Sunday, July 14th, has brought to light a tale of infidelity, jealousy, and the devastating consequences of unchecked rage.
At the heart of this tragedy is Violet Mapungwana, a 26-year-old woman who found herself entangled in a web of deceit and betrayal. Mapungwana, a married woman, was engaged in an extramarital affair with Gamuchirai Hungwe, a man who, like her, was also bound by the ties of matrimony.
The affair, however, was not destined to last. Hungwe, consumed by possessiveness and jealousy, became enraged when he witnessed Mapungwana flirting with another man, identified only as Givie, at the Nhedziwa Business Centre where she operated a food vending stall.
“Hungwe and Mapungwana were lovers involved in an extramarital relationship, and all hell broke loose when the former quizzed the latter for flirting with and allegedly dating another man. He claimed that he saw a man only identified as Givie giving her a plate of sadza at her food vending stall,” revealed Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka, acting Manicaland provincial police spokesperson.
Driven by a whirlwind of emotions, Hungwe confronted Mapungwana at her home, demanding answers and accusing her of being promiscuous. The confrontation escalated into a heated argument, culminating in Mapungwana’s decision to end their illicit relationship.
Hungwe, unable to accept her rejection, unleashed his fury in a horrifying act of violence. He produced a knife and viciously stabbed Mapungwana multiple times, targeting her head, breasts, hands, thighs, and back. The attack was brutal and merciless, leaving Mapungwana fighting for her life at Mutambara Mission Hospital.
The chilling details of the attack have sent a wave of fear and disbelief through the community. The incident has highlighted the dangers of unchecked jealousy and the devastating consequences of violence in the context of infidelity.
In a shocking twist, Hungwe, after inflicting his brutal attack, callously contacted Mapungwana’s husband, informing him that his wife had been stabbed by a boyfriend she was fighting with. He then vanished from the scene, leaving behind a trail of blood and a community grappling with the aftermath of this horrific crime.
“On the fateful day, at around 7pm, Hungwe proceeded to Mapungwana’s house. He quizzed and accused her of being promiscuous. An altercation ensued and the woman decided to terminate their relationship. This did not go down well with Hungwe, who produced a knife and brutally stabbed Mapungwana on the head, breasts, hands, thighs and back. Hungwe took Mapungwana’s cellphone and called her husband, telling him that she had been stabbed by a boyfriend she was fighting with. He vanished from the scene,” stated Assistant Inspector Chinyoka.
