A disturbing video has emerged, raising serious questions about the leadership within some structures of the ruling Zanu-PF party.
The footage, which has gone viral on social media, allegedly shows the Zanu-PF chairman for Mutasa district engaged in a violent altercation with his wife over a paltry US$5 meant for beer.
The video, which has been widely shared and condemned by many, depicts a scene of raw brutality. The chairman, whose identity remains undisclosed, is seen locked in a fist fight with his spouse, both individuals visibly bleeding from the mouth.
The background is filled with the anguished cries of a woman’s voice, pleading with the couple to stop fighting, her pleas falling on deaf ears. The video is a reminder of the pervasive issue of domestic violence in Zimbabwe, and it raises concerns about the character and conduct of those in positions of power.
The incident has sparked outrage and condemnation from various quarters, with many questioning the party’s commitment to upholding its own stated policies against violence. The video, which is distressingly graphic, has ignited a national debate on the issue of domestic violence, particularly within the context of political leadership.
In a statement released by the party’s director of information, Farai Marapira, Zanu-PF condemned the actions seen in the video, stating that the ruling party and its leader, President Emmerson Mnangagwa, do not tolerate any form of violence.
“What can be seen in the video is a clear case of domestic violence. As Zanu-PF our policy towards violence of any kind is clear as has been enunciated by His Excellency, President E. D. Mnangagwa time and time again. We do not condone any violence and encourage all citizens to adhere to the wisdom of His Excellency in finding peaceful resolutions to disputes of any nature,” he told Nehanda Radio.
Marapira further assured the public that the party would launch its own investigation into the matter and let the law take its course.
“As a party, we institute our own investigations into any cases of illegality allegedly perpetrated by members. As Zanu-PF, our members have an extra obligation to adhere to the dictates of the law. We do condone any such actions and we shall stand guided by police investigations,” Marapira said.
