A glimmer of hope has emerged for Mavis Mada, the 18-year-old girl from Wedza who was brutally assaulted by five young women in a horrific attack that sent shockwaves through the community. Dr Michael Mandaza, of Pacific 24Hour Hospital in Mabvuku, has stepped forward with a generous offer of free medical treatment and a chance for Mavis to train as a nurse aide, a lifeline for the young woman who has endured unimaginable suffering.
“Pacific 24hr Hospital is extending our gesture to offer Mavis a three-month full training on Nurse Aide course,” Dr Mandaza said. “This course has both theory and practical attachment for three months. Pacific 24hr Hospital is going to fund the full bill of the training; full uniform sets and also fund food and accommodation throughout the 90 days of training. This training gesture is to empower the girl child Mavis so that she becomes self-sufficient.”
The attack, which involved the insertion of sticks into Mavis’ private parts and lasted for four grueling hours, has left her with multiple bruises and scars, still in severe pain, and walking with a limp. While X-rays have revealed no fractures, the physical and emotional trauma she has endured will require extensive care and rehabilitation.
Mavis, who had been living with her grandmother after failing her Ordinary Level examinations two years ago, comes from a very poor background. Her mother, Sebia Muchenjekwa, a widow struggling to make ends meet as a housemaid in Harare, is left grappling with the immense burden of her daughter’s recovery.
The community, united in their horror and concern, has rallied around Mavis and her family. Sebia, in a desperate plea for help, last week appealed to Zimbabweans for financial support, highlighting the overwhelming weight she carries as a single parent.
“My daughter is alive, but she is writhing in pain,” Sebia shared, her voice laced with despair. “She has been bleeding continuously since the attack. I have used all the little money I had, and I have nothing left. She still needs further examinations and will have to attend court.”
Dr Mandaza’s offer provides Mavis with a path towards healing and a chance to rebuild her life. The training program offers her not only a means to support herself but also a chance to contribute to the well-being of others. It is a testament to the power of compassion and the resilience of the human spirit, a glimmer of hope in the face of unimaginable darkness.
The five assailants, Vimbai Mike (19), Rudo Manjere (17), Lilly Rose Munyoro (16), Lillian Chido Munyoro (17), and Sandra Vhumbunu, were apprehended by police on July 10th, following the circulation of a disturbing video of the assault on social media.
