Man gunned down in drive-by shooting in Waterloo
A quiet Friday night in Waterloo, KZN, was shattered by the sound of gunfire after a man was fatally shot while seated in his car on Amaqhawe Road in Phase 6. The victim, whose identity remains unknown, was reportedly targeted in a drive-by shooting, leaving residents shaken and the community in mourning.
According to a resident who requested anonymity, the barrage of gunshots woke her from her sleep.
“The shooters fired several shots at the man. It was clear he wasn’t going to survive,” she said.
Another resident confirmed that the victim was not from the area and was unfamiliar to them.
Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) officers were dispatched to the scene shortly after 8 pm, where they discovered the man’s body inside a grey VW Golf. The car bore the grim evidence of the attack, with bullet holes in the rear passenger glass and door. Three spent 9mm cartridges were recovered near the vehicle, indicating the severity of the shooting.
The victim sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the head, confirming the brutal nature of the attack. While the motive for the execution remains unclear, police are investigating the incident as a murder case.
KZN police spokeswoman, Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo, confirmed the incident, stating that police in Verulam are actively investigating the case. The community of Waterloo is left grappling with the shock and fear of this senseless act of violence, hoping for answers and justice for the victim.
