Hurungwe man sentenced to jail for illegal possession of marijuana
In a stern crackdown on drug-related offences, a 19-year-old man from Hurungwe, Clemence Dhamiyano, has been thrown behind bars for the illegal possession of cannabis.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe, the incident occurred on June 8, 2024, at around 2:00 AM, at the Chidamoyo Business Center. A police officer on patrol encountered Dhamiyano carrying a bag that was emitting a strong smell. Upon searching the bag, the officer discovered that it contained a quantity of prepared cannabis wrapped in plastic.
Dhamiyano was immediately taken into custody and charged with the possession of a dangerous drug. The cannabis seized from the suspect weighed 0.305 kilograms.
The case was heard at the Karoi Magistrates’ Court, where Dhamiyano faced the consequences of his actions. The magistrate handed down a sentence of 12 months’ imprisonment, with 6 months suspended for 5 years. This means that the young man will serve an effective 6-month jail term for the offence.
This conviction serves as a stark reminder of the serious consequences individuals face when they engage in the illegal possession and distribution of illegal drugs.
