The late war veteran and retired Brigadier-General Romeo Donald Mutsvunguma has been declared a national hero. President Mnangagwa, recognizing the exceptional contributions made by Brig-Gen Mutsvunguma before and after the nation’s independence, bestowed upon him the highest recognition attainable.

Born on March 4, 1957, in Makoni District, the esteemed Brig-Gen Mutsvunguma sadly passed away in Rusape last Wednesday at the age of 67. His remarkable life and unwavering dedication to Zimbabwe’s cause have left an indelible mark on the nation’s history.

Last night, ZANU PF Secretary for Legal Affairs, Cde Patrick Chinamasa, visited the Mutsvunguma family at their Rusape residence to convey the news of the national hero status conferred upon their beloved late family member. Acting on behalf of President Mnangagwa, Cde Chinamasa expressed that this honour was bestowed in recognition of Brig-Gen Mutsvunguma’s illustrious contributions both during the struggle for independence and in the post-independence era.

Brig-Gen Mutsvunguma’s journey as a freedom fighter began in September 1975 when he courageously crossed the border into Mozambique. Alongside 16 other cadres, including three females, he joined the ranks of the liberation struggle. Assigned as a security officer responsible for screening recruits, he played a vital role at Nyadzonya Camp.

Continuing his journey, Brig-Gen Mutsvunguma underwent initial military training at Morogoro ZIPRA Camp under ZIPA between 1975 and June 1976. His commitment to the cause and unwavering resolve during this period set the foundation for his future achievements.
