Tragic Turn of Events: Stepfather brutally murders 13-year-old stepson
The Rustenburg community is reeling in the wake of a horrific incident, as a 37-year-old stepfather stands accused of brutally murdering his 13-year-old stepson.
The suspect is expected to make his first court appearance at the Rustenburg Magistrates Court on Monday, June 24, 2024, following his arrest on Friday, June 21.
According to the police, the gruesome incident unfolded after a neighbour alerted authorities to a disturbance at a residence in Oos einde, Rustenburg. Upon arriving at the scene, officers discovered the lifeless body of Olebogeng Molebangwe, the victim, who had suffered two apparent stab wounds to his upper arm.
While the suspect, whose identity has not been publicly released, initially claimed to have assaulted the teenager with a belt for leaving his younger sibling unattended, the victim’s body also bore visible signs of further physical abuse.
“The victim was found with what appeared to be two stab wounds on the upper arm, although the suspect alleged he assaulted him with a belt for leaving his younger brother alone,” said Police spokesman Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone. “The victim’s body also had visible assault injuries.”
The suspect was promptly arrested and detained by the authorities, sparking outrage and condemnation from community leaders and law enforcement officials alike.
North West Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Sello condemned the incident, expressing deep concern over the betrayal of trust, as the victim had been killed at the hands of someone who was supposed to protect him.
