In a concerning turn of events, nine Ethiopian nationals were convicted of violating the Immigration Act in Zimbabwe. The incident occurred on April 25, 2024, at the Chirundu Border Post.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe, the accused individuals are Gezaheng Shuga (20), Caleb Gata Chess (18), Fasel Jamal (17), Kebarke Lumboro (15), Dereje Daniel (18), Dazala Nole (24), Mangesto Marzkos (25), Awol Mudoro (18), and Mohadin Girma.
The authorities received information that the Ethiopian nationals were hiding in a house in Chirundu Heights. Acting on this tip, immigration officers and police officers conducted a search and found the accused persons locked inside the residence.
The nine individuals were found to have entered Zimbabwe without valid permits, in contravention of the country’s Immigration Act. As a result, they were arraigned before the Karoi Magistrates’ Court.
The accused persons were ultimately warned, cautioned, and discharged, awaiting deportation from the country.
