The death of Katlego “KG” Ranaka, daughter of Generations: The Legacy actress Manaka Ranaka, has cast a pall of grief over the family and sparked conflicting narratives surrounding the circumstances of her passing.
While the family has confirmed her death on Thursday, 23 January, after a short illness, conflicting reports on social media and amongst family acquaintances suggest a possible accident as the cause. This discrepancy has left many questioning the official narrative and adding to the already profound sense of loss.
Katlego’s aunt and family spokesperson, Nompumelelo Ranaka, speaking exclusively to News24, described Katlego as “a blessing to our lives – she was a compassionate, kind, soft-spoken and warm baby girl who brought joy to our lives and blessed us with our grandson, Mpho Ranaka. The fond memories we have shared will remain with us forever.”
She announced details of the memorial service, to be held at the San Salvador Catholic Church in Leondale on Thursday, 30 January, from 2pm to 4pm, followed by a candlelight, clap-and-tap ceremony at the family home on Friday, 31 January. The funeral service will take place at the same church on Saturday, 1 February, from 8am to 11am, before burial at South Park Cemetery in Germiston.
The family requested attendees to observe a black and baby blue dress theme in Katlego’s memory. Nompumelelo also expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support, stating: “On behalf of my parents, siblings, our children and grandchild, we would like to express our heartfelt gratitude for the outpouring of love and support during this incredibly difficult time. Your kind words and gestures have been a great comfort to our family.”
However, the official statement hasn’t quelled speculation surrounding Katlego’s death. Her cousin, Thandokuhle Ranaka, shared her heartbreak on social media, writing: “Never did I think that this day would come so soon. My heart is broken; you have left me with a wound that I don’t know how to heal. Until I find the words, till we meet again.” This raw expression of grief contrasts with the family’s more formal announcement, hinting at a deeper emotional complexity surrounding the circumstances.
This discrepancy between the family’s public statement and the circulating rumours highlights the sensitivity surrounding death in many cultures and the family’s desire to handle the situation with grace and respect for their traditions. The family’s decision to not publicly disclose the cause of death, while understandable, has fuelled speculation and left many seeking answers.
Meanwhile, Katlego’s sister, Naledi Ranaka, shared a poignant tribute on TikTok: “If love could have saved you, then you would have lived forever. Day 3 and I still can’t believe you’re gone. I don’t even have the words to express how I feel right now but maybe I will someday day. While God eased your pain he broke my heart. You were my day one. Maybe in another life time I would have been able to say goodbye. Fly high my angel I love beyond infinity.” This deeply personal message underscores the profound loss felt by the immediate family.
Further complicating matters, Katlego’s own social media posts reveal a deep love for her four-year-old son, Mpho. In a November 2023 Instagram post, she captioned a photo of her son: “Love of my life this one.” This tender sentiment highlights the devastating impact her death will have on her young son and the family as a whole.
