South Africa and the SADC region at large mourns the passing of acclaimed musician and actress Winnie Khumalo, who died earlier today following a short illness.

The news, confirmed by her family, has cast a shadow over the nation’s entertainment scene, leaving behind a legacy of powerful music and memorable television performances. Khumalo was 51 years old.

Khumalo’s sister, Tshepi Rakeepile, speaking to both News24 and Daily Sun, described the sudden turn of events. “We can confirm that Winnie has passed. She suffered a short illness. Just when we thought she was getting better, she woke up today feeling unwell. Her daughter Rethabile took her to the hospital. Upon arrival and was declared dead,” she said. Rakeepile also confirmed to Daily Sun that Khumalo was rushed to Baragwanath Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Another sister, Ntshepenge Rakeepile, speaking to Daily Sun, added, “My sister was sick. She did have a short illness and we really thought she was recovering. But this morning it turned out she hadn’t fully recovered from her illness. She was quickly rushed to the hospital. Unfortunately, she was pronounced dead,”

Khumalo’s son, Thando Khumalo, also confirmed his mother’s passing to Daily Sun, stating that the family was preparing an official statement. The specific cause of death has not yet been publicly disclosed.

Born on 20 July 1973 in Mofolo North, Soweto, Khumalo’s musical journey began at the tender age of 15. She quickly gained recognition, achieving widespread success with hit albums like Hey Laitie and Tshina Tshina, produced by the renowned Sello Chicco Twala. Her powerful vocals and versatile performances cemented her place in the South African music industry, leading to collaborations with numerous prominent artists. Her album, I Just Wanna Live My Life, achieved gold status, selling over 25,000 copies.

Beyond her musical achievements, Khumalo graced television screens with memorable roles in popular SABC productions such as Muvhango and Mponeng. She also participated in various stage productions and films. Despite her demanding career, she prioritised raising her two children, Thando and Rethabile.

In 2024, it emerged that Khumalo’s son, Thando (33), is one of the children of the late boxing champion, Dingaan Thobela. This revelation added another layer to the already complex and rich tapestry of Khumalo’s life.

The family has requested that funeral arrangements will be communicated at a later date. The outpouring of grief from fans, fellow musicians, and the broader African public is a testament to Khumalo’s enduring impact on the continent’s cultural landscape. Her contributions to music and television will be remembered for generations to come. Her legacy extends beyond her impressive career, encompassing her devotion to her family and her enduring spirit.
