Popular Zimdancehall chanter, Hwindi President, real name Bessel Parehwa, is appealing for financial assistance following a serious car accident on Sunday.

The 38-year-old musician and his entourage were returning to Harare from a successful performance in Masvingo when tragedy struck. The accident occurred in Beatrice, leaving the musician and his companions with significant injuries and mounting medical bills.

The accident involved Hwindi President’s Honda Fit, which he was driving at the time. He was travelling with his elder brother, Blessing Parehwa, disc jockey Tinashe Chatiza, and manager Learnmore Mukonoweshuro. All occupants sustained injuries in the crash.

Describing the aftermath, Hwindi President stated: “We are home and grounded since we have exhausted our savings to foot part of the medical bills. I have chest pains and my leg was injured in the process.”

The extent of the injuries sustained by the group is considerable. Hwindi President continued, explaining the dire financial situation.

“My brother was seriously injured together with the DJ and our manager. We need at least US$600 to pay our medical expenses since we have nothing left in our coffers. We are appealing for help from our well-wishers, friends and promoters who are willing to help us lessen the burden,” he said.

Hwindi President’s journey to Masvingo was for a high-profile gig at the Lake October event. He shared the stage with a stellar lineup of musicians including Winky D, Gemma Griffiths, Mbeu, and Mr Candy, delivering a reportedly impressive performance before the unfortunate incident.

The musician expressed gratitude for their survival, acknowledging the potential for a far worse outcome.

He said: “We are lucky to be alive.”

Fatigue and loss of concentration are frequently cited as major causes of accidents on Zimbabwe’s highways, prompting calls for increased awareness and caution amongst performing artists. Experts are advising performers to prioritise rest and recovery after performances to mitigate the risk of such incidents.

The financial burden placed upon Hwindi President and his companions is substantial. The US$600 appeal represents a significant sum, particularly given the group’s depleted resources.
