JOHANNESBURG – The South African gospel music fraternity is mourning the loss of legendary singer Solly Moholo, who passed away on Wednesday evening, 2 October, after a brave battle with illness.
The news, announced by his team, brings a sombre end to a career that spanned decades and touched the hearts of countless fans across the country and beyond.
Moholo, renowned for his soulful hits like Ke Latlhile Bokinza and Robala ka Khotso, was hospitalised after falling ill during a pre-album launch tour in Botswana.
“It is with great sadness that we are informing you on behalf of the Molokoane family, that is Solly Moholo’s family, that our beloved legend ‘Solly Moholo’ has sadly passed on,” the statement read.
“Solly Moholo was hospitalised after falling ill following his pre-album launch tour in Botswana.”
The statement further expressed the profound sense of loss felt by those who knew and loved him.
“May his laughter continue to echo the walls of heaven. Let us remember him fondly for the healing music he gave us over the years.”
The family has requested privacy as they grieve and prepare for his burial. Details regarding the memorial and funeral arrangements will be shared on Moholo’s social media pages in the coming days. The team also asked for prayers and support for the grieving family during this difficult time.
“Please keep the family in your prayers,” they said.
Moholo’s passing leaves a gaping hole in the South African gospel music scene. He was not only a gifted singer but also a respected producer who played a pivotal role in launching the careers of other prominent gospel artists, including Winnie Mashaba and the late Matlakala.
Mphoza Mashabela, Provincial Chairperson of the Limpopo Artists Movement (LAM), expressed his deep sorrow at the news.
“We lost Oleseng Shuping, Kenny Makweng, and now Solly Moholo. I’m so heartbroken,” he lamented.
Mashabela highlighted Moholo’s significant contribution to the Sione music genre and the widespread popularity he enjoyed, particularly in Limpopo.
“Limpopo people supported the music from the first album. As LAM, we even tried to raise funds to pay his medical bills. Unfortunately, he left us. Only God knows who will celebrate his life forever,” he added.
Mashabela had also planned to invite Moholo as a guest artist to the Limpopo Legends Awards, a testament to the enduring respect and admiration he commanded within the music industry.
Moholo’s illness began tragically on 22 August while he was performing in Botswana to promote his upcoming album, which was scheduled for release on 14 September 2024. He suffered a stroke and multiple organ failure during the performance, requiring immediate medical attention and brain surgery.
Last week, his team released a statement detailing the severity of his condition and appealing for financial assistance to cover the mounting medical costs, which had reached approximately R700,000. The statement explained the circumstances surrounding his illness.
“On 22 August 2024, Mr Molokoane commenced a promotional tour in Botswana for his forthcoming album, which is presently scheduled for release on 14 September 2024. Unfortunately, during this tour, Solly Moholo suffered a stroke and multiple organ failure, necessitating immediate and extensive medical intervention, including brain surgery.”
The appeal for funds underscored the significant financial burden faced by the family.
“The medical costs associated with his treatment have accumulated to an approximate amount of R700,000. Given the substantial nature of these expenses, the Molokoane family is urgently seeking financial support from the public at large as well as his associates and/or supporters to assist in covering his medical costs.”

His contributions to the music industry, both as a performer and a mentor, will be remembered and cherished by fans and fellow artists alike. He will be deeply missed.
