JOHANNESBURG – The life of Sindisiwe Khambule, a once prominent actress who graced South African screens in popular dramas like “Zone 14”, “Tsotsi”, and “Yizo Yizo”, has taken a tragic turn.
Khambule, who was also romantically linked to the late music icon Brenda Fassie, has been spotted in the streets of Yeoville, Johannesburg, looking dishevelled and disoriented. Her story is a stark reminder of the fickle nature of fame and fortune, and the devastating consequences that can arise when life takes an unexpected turn.
Khambule’s fall from grace is a poignant tale of a woman who experienced both the highs and lows of the entertainment industry. At the height of her career, she earned a substantial income, living a life of luxury with cars and a comfortable apartment. However, despite her material success, she confessed to a deep sense of unhappiness.
“I asked God, I had everything from the age of 22. I had my car, apartments, businesses, everything, but I was not happy. They killed my family because of my money. I was earning R52 000 in two weeks, and I said, God, please take it all because I want to be like everybody. God took it,” she said in a video captured by a fan who encountered her on the streets.
Khambule’s relationship with Brenda Fassie, a controversial and iconic figure in South African music, played a significant role in her rise to prominence. Fassie, known for her powerful vocals and outspoken personality, introduced Khambule to the media and showbiz industry at a Kora Awards event in Sun City in the early 2000s. Fassie then publicly declared Khambule as her latest lesbian lover at her album launch at the former EMI offices.
Khambule’s acting career took off after her introduction to the industry, but she faced challenges with her family in Pietermaritzburg. She moved from Berea, where she had been living, to Midrand, seeking a fresh start. Her last acting project, which remains unreleased, saw her appearing alongside controversial Afro-Pop singer Kelly Khumalo and Khanyi Mbau.
Sources close to Khambule have painted a bleak picture of her current situation. One source, who has known her for over two decades, said she is now homeless and seeking assistance from former acquaintances in Berea.
“The last time she tried her luck on TV was when she acted alongside Khanyi Mbau and Kelly Khumalo in a project from Chicco Twala, which is yet to be released. All I know is that she was always demanding a lot of payment after acting even before their project could be released,” the source said.
Another source, who lived near Khambule’s complex in Midrand, confirmed that she no longer has a phone.
“She should just return home to Pietermaritzburg to start a new life. Jozi has dealt a big blow to this once beautiful lady,” the source said.
Khambule’s story is a cautionary tale about the fleeting nature of fame and fortune, and the importance of finding happiness beyond material possessions.
