South African gospel star Solly Moholo, known for his energetic performances and hits like “Ba Mmitsa Tsotsi” and “Tsoha Jonase”, is currently recovering in a Botswana hospital after falling ill over the weekend.
The news of Moholo’s hospitalisation came as a shock to fans and colleagues, who are sending prayers and well wishes for his speedy recovery. Moholo had travelled to Botswana to perform a series of gigs as part of the pre-launch campaign for his upcoming album, “Wubani O zo Pepeza”.
“Unfortunately, upon his return to his residence in Botswana, Ntate Moholo fell ill and had to be rushed to a hospital in Botswana. As we speak, his management team is still in Botswana until Solly Moholo makes a full recovery in the hospital. He is much better today than he was yesterday,” the statement added.
The family has requested prayers for Moholo’s full recovery, promising to keep fans updated on his condition.
“We will keep you updated regarding any developments,” said his PR team in a statement shared on his social media pages.
Moholo’s illness comes at a time when he was looking to reignite his music career, particularly with younger audiences. The veteran musician had made a successful foray into the Amapiano genre in 2022, releasing the single “Ntata Ake SaSepela” and expressing his desire to reach a new generation of fans with his music.
“The younger generation has a significant influence on the world today. Many have turned to taverns, which is why I’m bringing this vibe to reach them wherever they are,” Moholo had said earlier this year, explaining his decision to venture into Amapiano.
However, Moholo’s journey has not been without its challenges. Earlier this year, he opened up about battling depression and suicidal thoughts after a period of inactivity following the release of his last album in 2017.
“I spent a lot of time being isolated. It was not really happening. I was watching television a lot. Things became heavy. I’m not a pretender. Things were not coming together. I didn’t even get visitors. I was feeling isolated. Shows were not there,” he revealed in a candid interview on The Venting podcast.
Moholo admitted to having considered taking his own life, even going as far as putting rat poison in his mouth before spitting it out.
“I wanted to eat Rattex. I once saw guys and wanted them to lend me a gun to shoot myself. It was hard,” he said.
Despite these struggles, Moholo has shown resilience and a determination to continue his musical journey. His recent venture into Amapiano, coupled with his upcoming album, demonstrated his commitment to connecting with fans and sharing his music with a wider audience.
