Unrest in Nkayi After Disputed Parliamentary Election

Supporters of the MDC party in Nkayi, Matabeleland North province are facing intimidation after Chief Ndlovu filed a legal challenge to the results of the recent parliamentary election in Nkayi North constituency. Ndlovu, the MDC candidate, lost the election to the Zanu PF candidate Sithembiso Nyoni by a narrow margin in August. However, Ndlovu claims the election was marred by widespread voter intimidation targeting his supporters.

Ever since launching his court case disputing the outcome, sources say some MDC activists have fled their homes out of fear of retaliation by Zanu PF members and security agents.

According to reports, seven campaign workers escaped to a safe house in Kwekwe last week to avoid threats and harassment. Ndlovu has confirmed Zanu PF supporters have been targeting people involved in his campaign, tearing down posters before the vote and threatening backers. A police complaint has been filed about the new incidents of intimidation, though local authorities say they have not received full details yet.

In his legal challenge, Ndlovu argues an unreasonable number of voters allegedly received improper assistance at the polls, indicating vote manipulation.

Independent observers also found the election process fell short of free and fair standards. As the dispute makes its way through the courts, tensions in Nkayi remain high and the safety of residents will be crucial to resolve amid democratic concerns.
