Nelson Chamisa booted out!

The CCC opposition party in Zimbabwe has been kicked from their rented property in Belvedere, Harare due to non-payment of rent. According to reports, CCC leader Nelson Chamisa entered into a verbal lease agreement in May to rent the main house for US$1,000 per month.

However, in July and August, CCC only paid US$800 per month instead of the agreed amount. In September, CCC additionally took occupancy of a cottage on the property but failed to pay the US$900 rent and security deposit. This resulted in US$1,300 in outstanding rental fees owed to the property owners.

Through their legal representatives, the owners informed CCC that their lease was cancelled immediately due to breach of contract. CCC was instructed to vacate the premises with no notice required given the situation. If they do not depart voluntarily, the owners will pursue legal eviction proceedings and damages.

This arises as questions remain over European Union funding of US$2.5 million reportedly given to CCC before elections. Some concerns have been raised as to why the funds did not pay polling agents as intended. The ousted of CCC from their rented office space adds challenges amid criticism of their organizational structure and financial administration.

Going forward, resolving outstanding disputes and stabilizing finances and facilities will be important for the opposition party to address as concerns persist.
