Former Cabinet minister Jonathan Moyo, who is currently in self-exile, has praised the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec) for demonstrating independence and professionalism during the country’s August 23 and 24 harmonized elections. Despite criticism from several observer missions, Moyo commended Zec for addressing concerns raised by opposition parties and individuals.
In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), Moyo acknowledged Zec’s responsiveness and effectiveness, particularly in a court challenge where a group of registered voters sought to nullify the nomination of 12 Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) and other parliamentary candidates. Moyo emphasized that Zec’s support in responding to the legal challenge was crucial in ensuring the successful election of the CCC candidates.
Moyo acknowledged the difficult and unprecedented conditions under which Zec operated and believed that history would recognize Zec’s role in upholding the democratic process. He praised the transparency of Zec’s operations, highlighting their accountability for any omissions and commissions during the election. Moyo noted that Zec took responsibility for delays in the opening of polling stations and the unavailability of ballot papers, demonstrating a marked difference from previous elections.
However, the Southern African Development Community (SADC) observer mission and other organizations have accused Zec of lacking independence and favouring the ruling Zanu PF party.
