lllllZanu PF aspiring MP for Mutare Central constituency Esau Mupfumi launched his election campaign with a barrage of gifts for voters. The flashy launch was held at Sakubva Beit Hall where he donated food hampers, laptops and sports kits.
Mupfumi, a Zanu PF central committee member, faces a challenge from CCC candidate Brian James in the coming election.
In a blatant attempt to buy votes, Mupfumi handed out food parcels to old-age pensioners, laptops to students and sports kits to party districts.
His campaign stunt seems to have impressed some Zanu PF supporters. Tadiwa Chimombe praised Mupfumi, claiming “his footprints are everywhere in Manicaland.” Malcom Masarira also said the MP has been “doing door to door campaigns and preaching the party’s manifesto.”
But critics say the donations are just a cynical ploy to buy votes rather than addressing the real issues facing the constituency.
Only time will tell if Mupfumi’s gifts will translate into votes on polling day. But one thing is clear – he will stop at nothing to win the election and get that cushy MP job and its benefits.
